54 unadoptable feral cats rescued from Navy-owned island

Rather than being euthanized because of the threat they posed to nesting shorebirds on a U.S. Navy-owned island off the S. California coast, 54 feral cats have been live-trapped and relocated to a $100,000 facility at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. The Navy and USFWS were apparently influenced by the Humane Society of the United States, even though the adult cats are far too wild to be adopted. The North County Times and LA Times.

Wow I hadn't heard of this story. While I can understand that the cats posed a threat to their natural enemies, the birds, I don't understand why nature wasn't allowed to take it's course. These animals have been taken away from their home and hunting grounds.

I'm sure it was human intervention that put them there in the first place but where does it end with our meddling in the affairs of nature?
