A new survey of game agencies indicates the black bear population in states located East of the Mississippi River totals 163,000. The number of reported Eastern US bear/human conflicts has also risen, with Tennessee up from 300 to 1,000 over the past 10 years, followed by New York, which jumped from 587 to 1,127; and New Jersey, from 691 to 1,117.
