A 10-foot, 8-inch alligator known around a Slidell, Louisiana subdivision as Big Joe bit the arm off an 11-year-old swimmer yesterday, sending authorities into a rush to save the boy and quickly track down and kill the reptile to retrieve the appendage for possible surgical reattachment. Devin Funck underwent surgery last night, though today's Time's Picayune reports it was unknown whether the reattachment was successful.
